Sofía Ros - Accordion

Biography

Winner of ‘Trophée Mondiale de l’accordeon’ 2020 (Junior Classique) and Vienna International Music Competition 2021 at the age of 18, Sofia Ros is a student of the welldistinguished Serbian accordionist and pedagogue Djordje Gajic at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland.

In September 2021, Sofia made her debut at the Musikverein’s Brahms Saal in Vienna and in the up-coming season 2021/2022, Sofia she will be performing Astor Piazzolla’s ‘Aconcagua’ Concerto with the Irving Symphony Orchestra in Dallas, Texas with maestro Hector Guzmán. She will also perform in other well-known venues throughout the UK such as the Purcell Room and Corinthia Hotel organized by the Drake Calleja Trust.

As soloist with orchestra, Ros has performed at the Queen’s Hall in Edinburgh (Scotland) in two occasions, as a finalist of the Edinburgh Competition Festival (Concerto Class), featuring Richard Galliano’s ‘Opale Concerto’ and Astor Piazzolla’s Double Concerto. Her repertoire ranges from original works for accordion (Kusyakov, Lorentzen, Londonov, Makkonen...), to transcriptions from Bach, Scarlatti, Schnittke and Albeniz.

She has been awarded a number of first prizes in international accordion competitions, including most recently the Moscow International music competition 2021, the ‘British College Association of accordionist’ competition 2021, ‘Odín International music competition 2021’ and ‘London Young Musician of the year 2020/21’ where she obtained the Grand Prix. She will also be working on a CD recording with TrueArt TV as part of the prize. Throughout her career, she has also been awarded at international competitions abroad in Klingethal (Germany), Castelfidardo and San Vincenzo (Italy). First prizes in Spain include the Arraste Accordion Competition 2012, 2018 and 2019 and in Scotland, the ‘Allie Cullen’ Memorial Prize as part of Glasgow Music Festival Competition 2019.

Born in the Canary Islands (Spain), Sofia gained a full scholarship to study at Scotland’s National Specialist Music School ‘St. Mary’s Music School’ in Edinburgh at the age of 13 where she studied for 4 years, winning their annual competition “Director’s Recital Prize” in 2020.

In 2021, she was awarded a partial ABRSM EU Undergraduate Scholarship at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland as well as been supported by the Craxton Memorial Trust and Talent Unlimited.

Sofia plays a Pigini ‘Super Compact’ bayan made in Castelfidardo, Italy.
