Michael Lan started taking piano lesson at Hindhead Music Centre at age six with Nikiforos Klironomos and then with Ourania Gassiou. At thirteen he started studying with Janet Newman at the Royal Grammar School, Guildford, where he was also the King’s Music Scholar. He is currently in his second year of undergraduate study at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, under the tutelage of Philip Jenkins.
He has won a variety of both recital and concerto prizes, including the Steynor Prize Musician of the Year in 2014, the Buzzard Cup at Woking Music Festival, and the Challenge Cup, Ashwin Trophy, and Concerto Award at Godalming Music Festival. This year, he was nominated to represent Godalming at the Emanuel Piano Trophy competition (North London Music Festival) and was also the recipient of a Tilford Bach Society Award. Michael was also a finalist and winner of the Kawai Prize at the 9th Young Pianist of the North International Competition in Newcastle. Michael has participated in masterclasses with Christopher Elton, Noriko Ogawa, Rustem Hayroudinoff, Peter Bithell, Anne Queffélec, Daniel Tong, and Martin Roscoe.
In 2013 Michael was invited to give a recital at the Guildford Institute as part of their Young Musicians’ Recital series. 2015 saw him make numerous appearances both as a solo recitalist and with orchestra. Highlights include a performance with Southern Pro Musica, playing Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2 and also Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1 with the Guildford Youth Symphony Orchestra at St. John’s Church, Waterloo. Other past performances include appearances at major venues such as St. John’s Smith Square and Milton Court Concert Hall. This year, Michael was invited to record a piano duet for BBC Radio 3 at Air Edel Recording Studios.
