Derin Dusenkalkar - Clarinet

Biography

Born on May the 3rd 2000, in Istanbul, Turkey, Derin is a musician, clarinetist and performer. He received his initial musical training playing the piano when he was 6 years old. In 2011, he entered Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University State Conservatoire-which is one of the few conservatoires that conducts full-time music education starting from secondary school level and began to study clarinet with Mr Feza Çetin. He continued his studies with Assistant Professor Ebru Mine Sonakın.

Studying at a conservatoire from an early age brought him into contact with all sorts of talented and professional musicians. He also had the chance to attend the master classes in various countries that he significantly benefitted from. He has worked with clarinetists such as Bobo Yotzov, Nicholas Cox, Michel Lethiec, Annelien Van Wauwe and Ecesu Sertesen.

From 2015 to 2018 the Clarinet Quintet “Clarisemble” that he was the member of played in local festivals and joined in the 18th International Young Musicians Chamber Music Competition in Edirne where they were awarded the 3rd prize. Clarisemble also gave regular concerts in Istanbul and Ayvalik.

He began his Undergraduate studies at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland in September 2018 under the tutorage of John Cushing after his successful audition on November 2017. He has been generously awarded a 4 year scholarship by the Conservatoire.

Derin enjoys playing in an orchestra and collaborating with fellow musicians in chamber music groups greatly. He regularly gives chamber music and orchestral performances. He has worked with conductors such as David Watkin, Gary Walker, Antonio Pirolli, June-Sung Park and Junping Qian.

Derin will begin his 2nd year at the RCS in September 2019 and will be adding a Conducting Module to his studies alongside Clarinet and Bass Clarinet.

Derin is an enthusiastic artist with a genuine appreciation of music. His desire is to further expand his musical knowledge, ability, and perspective at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland where he is proud to be a student at and to be a professional clarinet player in the years to come.

Other than music Derin is an avid chess player and a dubbing artist. He’s an admirer of cinema, literature and fine arts.

As of June 2019 Derin has had the honour to join the Talent Unlimited family. He is grateful for the support of Talent Unlimited and the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland.
